Orchids, like this white phalaenopsis stem, have a power to bewitch that perhaps no other plant can equal. According to legend, as long ago as 2800BC the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung was an orchid enthusiast and Confucius, more than two thousand years later, shared his passion. In the early 19th century, the sixth Duke of Devonshire was so obsessed with orchids that he had a huge greenhouse (100 yards long by 50 yards wide) built to nurture his enormous collection. Today, it has been estimated that between four and five million people in the world have a fascination for orchids that verges on an addiction. And while we don't imagine that the Bloom version featured here will cause 'orchid fever', it might help to explain the attraction of these fabulous flowers.
